Sailing Dinghy DescriptionDinghy SystemsMoving Through the Water

What is a "Sailing Dinghy?"
Dinghy Beach

A sailing dinghy is basically a rowboat, less than 14 feet in length propelled through the water by sail. These boats are inexpensive and very simple to operate. They also make good instructional boats for those learning to sail. Some people use sailing dinghies to shuttle between the shore and an anchored Sailboat.

Unlike full size sailboats, sailing dinghies do not have ballast other than the weight of the crew and do not have a cockpit. Like a rowboat, the sailing dinghy is mostly open and un-covered from bow to stern. Sailing dinghies, also like rowboats, have oar-locks and oars. When the wind does not cooperate, oars can be used as a secondary means of propulsion.
